Pros and cons of arming students with credit cards

There is always a positive to any negative and in this case, one could say that the negatives outweigh the positives for sure. I can think of many cons but very few pros in this case. lets start off by looking on the bright side of things.

The good thing about lending students money is that they can have quick access to money if they need an extra book at the last minute, of if they need to buy their own groceries whenever they are away to college. Keeping cash is not a good idea because when you are far away from home, and money somehow gets lost, it could take a while for parents to wire money to their children who are many miles from home.

The dangers of arming students with Credit cards is a main concern for many parents. When a student has a credit card at their disposal, they will make sure they use it. It's not easy to calm a craving and with so many advertisements on TV and on the internet today, one cannot help but splurge once in a while. Parties would be more inviting if one had money for the bare essentials of dorm parties and that is booze. Extra money could easily be used for recreation instead of education.

Treating yourself to a piece of technology or expensive outfit can hinder education on so many levels. When a student has bills to pay, how can they focus on their school work and dedicate 100% of their time to their studies? They can't and grades will decline because of it. The student would then need to split his time between school and a dead end job. As soon as a student graduates high school, they will certainly find out that they qualified for a credit card in the mail. Although the credit limit of your first credit card is limited, the bills can quickly escalate with yearly fees and late fees.

The student that works might have a harder time to fit in classes into his or her schedule. Time is scarce for us all and it should be used for long term benefit, not short term. A young person will find it hard to resist the temptations of the consumer driven and material world we live in. The added bills will cause students to dedicate more time to a dead end job and will almost suck the person into thinking one week at a time, instead of planning a year at a time. The Friday paycheck is all that matters to the student in debt and he/she will inevitably lose focus on what is really important, and that is education.

The easy availability of credit cards to students can cause them to forget about their talent and virtues and settle for the norm. The normal dead end job can hinder overall academic progress as well as cause a student to give up on his or her dreams. The qualification process of credit lending should be revised and credit should not be given out too freely. This is also a main reason why the U.S is facing a credit crunch right now. Over lending is a serious problem. What will happen to the future if all of our young people are working as laborers? The result is a loss in human ingenuity, and the loss of our future scholars and culture creators.

I feel that Americans are being turned into will-full slaves. We are slaves to our own self image and ego and when your young, you cant resist temptations as easily either. These lenders need to stop pushing credit cards on our youth because it will become the biggest distraction for them that will cause America to eventually wind up as a 3rd world country with 3rd world living standards. Credit should be given to a person who really qualifies and that is a person who is established and generating high income.
