Volunteering can be a very satisfying and grinding experience. The truth is many volunteers give up volunteering for many reasons. For many, they just loose the passion and the vision they once had. Then there are those who have been volunteers in some capacity or another for most of their lifetime. There is a great need for volunteers. There is a great need in general and you can pretty well pick and choose what you want to do.
What is volunteering?
Volunteering is giving your time, skills, and caring to a cause. It is not work so you can pretty well decide how much time you want to give. A lot of volunteering can be seasonal, like sorting good at a food bank. Volunteering can be ongoing and as frequent as a weekly event. Some people even give a daily personal service. Meals on wheels for the shut-ins or the elderly is a good example. Meals on wheels is so essential for some people and the one time in the day where the recipient makes human contact.
What volunteering is not
Volunteering is not work, although you have to be responsible and reliable. Volunteering is also not doing things for your elderly mother. That is called being family. Nor it is going to visit your friend at the hospital, that is called being a friend. Volunteering is something you do for a non profit organization and/or for a stranger. It is a formal way for being a member of a community.
How can you volunteer?
You can join volunteer organizations such the The Rotary Club, which has many chapters all over the world. You will however likely become a volunteer through someone you know, or by hearing or reading about the need or campaign of a non profit organization or hospital. There are many ways to become a volunteer and most don't really need special skills. That is the beauty of volunteering.
The local suspects
If you want to become a volunteer but don't know where to start you can contact some places in your community. There is the local hospital is you have one. There is the local church and the soup kitchen. Food banks, shelters, second hand clothing outlets, are some of the places you could call to see if they need your help. Someone will take your name and number. They will want to meet with you to do an informal or formal interview.
What can you do?
Sometimes what do you want to do is the real question. What are your interests and skills. Sometimes the need is to help an elder in the community get started in the garden in the spring. It could be to sort clothes or food for the needy. It could be to help drive a local scout troop to a weekend location. Volunteering can gain you some adventure in addition to the satisfaction of doing it.
Some volunteers become essential and responsible person of the organization because of the need or circumstance. It is however your time and your call. Volunteering could also be supporting the volunteers. Sometimes even the helper needs help and support. There are great opportunities in volunteering.
