Tips for renting a moving van

Tips for Renting a Moving Van

If you are in your early to middle twenties, chances are that you have already heard of the UHAUL truck rental company or some other brand of large commercial trucks that you can rent for a period of time to use on your own to move your stuff from one place to another.
Regardless of what the name of the company brand is, you will find the majority of what they offer to be almost the same. Each of the major companies offer a range of box trucks ranging from ten feet up to 26 feet in length. There are still a few of the older (1980's) trucks on the road that have the old manual transmissions in them, but fortunately for people like me the new trucks are all automatics. For those of you that have larger trucks as SUVs, most of these companies offer tow along trailers (both closed box and open bed) that you can hook right up to your own truck and drive it away. This saves a lot on the mileage charges with the drivable trucks. A few companies are even starting to offer cargo vans (minivans) and pickup trucks as well.

The process is just about the same everywhere you go as well. Your best bet to be certain that the truck you need is going to be ready for you at the time and place you need it is to book ahead. Most companies do have a website online where you can place a reservation for your truck and select where you would like to get it from when you pick it up. However, these sites all state that they can not guarantee your truck will be at the exact location you wanted to pick it up from. When this happens, they will call you and tell you the location closest to you that has the truck you need and they give you a few free miles to make up for the extra distance you will have to travel with the truck to drop it off. In my own personal experiences, I have found it to be much more practical to go directly to the place you want to pick up your truck from in advance and make the reservation with them in person. These companies are corporate owned and the fleet of vehicles is controlled by a center office somewhere within your region. Just because a truck was at a location last night, does not mean that it will be returned there tomorrow. On the other hand, if you make a reservation with the location manager ahead of time and they happen to see on the system that one is coming their way or that there is one nearby, they can get that truck and reserve it for you to be sure it is right there when you wanted it.
