Just eighteen miles from San Juan airport, an adventurous vacation spot awaits. Beaches, a quaint village, and an incredible rainforest add up to a fantastic destination. And where exactly is this place, you ask? None other than beautiful Luquillo, Puerto Rico.
With a population just under 20,000 people, Luquillo lies in the foothills of the magnificent El Yunque National Forest. According to the Welcome to Puerto Rico website, Cristobal Guzman founded the village in 1797. Located on the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, Luquillo beckons all who love a tropical location and seek a getaway that offers a multitude of activities.
TRAVEL SAFETY IN LUQUILLO
Safety is an important factor to consider in the planning of any vacation. Safe Traveler website reports travel in Puerto Rico is, in general, "relatively secure." The website says crime threats are about the same as in the United States. Other info available about travel safety in the region comes from visitors to the village. People who toured and stayed in Luquillo reported they felt safe throughout their stays there.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Affordable accommodations are available in Luquillo. A week for 2 in a mountain apartment costs $540. A mountain chalet is $150 per night or $700 per week for 2. A studio apartment is available for $90 nightly or $450 weekly for 2 people. Sleep with the lulling sounds of the rainforest. Plus the views are, well, breathtaking.
BEACHES IN LUQUILLO
There are beaches offering watersports galore in Luquillo: La Monserrate, Luquillo, and La Pared-to name a few. La Monserrate Beach is a popular tourist destination. Watch the surfers riding the waves on Luquillo Beach. La Pared Beach, off the beaten path and less crowded, also has a reputation as a good place to surf. Surfing is so popular on La Pared Beach, you'll even find La Selva Surf Shop just 2 blocks from the beach.
EL YUNQUE NATIONAL FOREST
Spanning 28,000 acres, the El Yunque National Forest boasts many beautiful orchids, thriving ferns, and a nice assortment of bamboo. If you are in to flora and vegetation, you are just going to flip when you see this place. Stroll the trails. The lush tropical plants are unbelievable. The forest will appeal to everyone. Also located at the site, the El Portal Tropical Forest Center provides exhibits and other interesting information about the rainforest.
