For the majority of today's society, online movie rentals are the bee's knees. Instead of taking time out of your busy day to wander around a store in hopes that the movie you want is available, you can just hop online and have it delivered to your door. If for no other reason, the convenience factor is the number one selling point for online movie rental companies.
Online movie rentals are the next logical step in an increasingly technological world. By creating a website with a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing interface, Netflix took the world by storm. Customers can create accounts online and choose a plan that suits them. You can decide the number of movies that are delivered to you, and how often you receive them. Unlimited rentals are ideal, as you don't have to keep track of how many of your monthly rentals you've used. As long as you have trust in the company, you give them your billing information and you'll automatically be charged at the beginning of each month for your plan.
Now that all the hard work is done, the fun starts you get to create a queue. What this means is that you get to make a long (or short!) list of all the movies you've been wanting to see. You can even add movies that aren't out yet, so that you don't forget in the future, and it will be shipped to you once it's arrived on DVD. You can organize the movies in the order you'd like to receive them, and you can edit it at any time. Once you've received a movie, you can keep it as long as you like literally. If you want to keep it for two days or a month, you can. You'll never incur late fees ever. It's every rental guru's dream come true. When you've had your fill, you simply place it back in the envelope provided to you, seal it, and send it on its way. There's no cost for postage, and you don't have to drive it back to a store by the time they close. Voila.
This is the basic setup of the two biggest online DVD movie rental sites at this time: Netflix and Blockbuster. Once Blockbuster realized how much business they were losing, they wised up and created a similar site. The difference between the two is that Blockbuster offers you the option to return your movies to their store, and rent another movie while you wait for the arrival of the next movie in your queue for free! The catch is that the number of times you can utilize this bonus is limited, but it is still a great perk. You can get recommendations based on your previous rentals and ratings (if you choose to do so),
