to reality but Adam paid no attention. All he knew was at that moment he needed her more than the air he was breathing.
Moments later Adam rolled off her, holding her in his arms, his hands grazed her feathers. One came off in hand and he brought it to his nose so he could know the scent of an angel. Only to have it turn to ash in his hands.
Riatta in turn pushed his arms from her and sat up to kneel next to him, she grabbed his discarded ivory robe and tossed it to cover his nakedness.
"What are you?" His voice was barely a whisper as he voiced the question aloud.
"I think you know."
Riatta stood to tower over him, her shadow seemed to grow and paralyze him, as she ripped the wings from her back and let them drop to the ground with a hollow thud as they too began to disintegrate.
"You're a Fallen." He said, answering his own question.
"And now, so are you." Riatta turned her back to him and started her trek back to the Gate of Eden. Finally it was done and paradise was no more. They were all free of it, free of them and free to start anew. So why did she not feel free?
She looked off into the distance as the skies began to darken and a shadow fell over the far edge of Eden's walls. As the dark clouds rolled slowly over Eden, it turned everything to ash. She heard the faint screams of animals and children. Soon it would be over.
She had reached the Gate as the two seraphs that guarded it turned toward her, their spears crossed to prevent her from leaving.
The seraphs took a step towards her and she leapt with grace to land on top of the fifteen foot wall that surrounded Eden and then to the ground below. She swiftly ran across the barren rock back towards the city.
The two seraphs took to the air, their six wings steadying them as they each aimed their spears at her fast retreating back. The first took aim and threw the spear but it missed, grazing her shoulder and only stunning her for a moment in her desperate attempt to get out of range. But it was too late and the second spear pierced the center of her back with such force it propelled her forward a dozen feet before pinning her to a great oak.
"A moment taken, a kiss madeWill awaken, God's own tirade." Those prophesized words were of little comfort to her now as she said them aloud. The roaring thunder and destruction of Eden rumbled in the background. What would it feel like to die? She had imagined it many times but even as she was pinned to the tree, she didn't know real pain. She pushed herself away from the tree, letting the spear slide through her as she took one step backwards and then another until she was free.
She looked down to see the tear in her chest but there was no blood and she knew it would close soon but as she took a step forward her leg collapsed beneath her as a searing pain pierced her breast and she looked down to see crimson. She clasped her chest with both hands to stem the flow of her blood but it was no use. She was dying.
"Noooo!" It was all she could manage as she fell back upon the hard ground. For the first time in her entire being she was able to smell the pungent odor of blood and taste it's bitterness as it flowed from her mouth. The ground beneath her was hard and unyielding. She felt light headed. She felt.
She felt.
"Thank you."
