Eden
He knelt on his perch on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the raging waterfall of pristine water. It's mist spraying and gently masking his tears. The news slowly sank in that Eve was dead, that his first and perhaps his only love had turned to ash and returned to the earth before him...without him.
Riatta saw the turmoil cross his face- a look that was both despair and disbelief. Tentatively she lay her hand upon Adam's shoulder, she diverted her attention to the falls and exhaled a deep breath of regret. They had all had such high hopes for this Eden and for this Adam and Eve, but as much as Eden was a paradise in every sense of the word it was too cursed with free will. It reeked of it.
In the next instant Adam clung to her calves like a distraught child. His eyes closed tightly, his breath caught in his throat as he choked back the instinct to scream out his rage. The melodic music playing in the background was a bittersweet reminder of the festivities that were going on below and the thousands who gathered to give praise to Eden and all its inhabitants.
She laid her hand gently upon the top of his head, stroking her fingers through his mahogany locks. His hair felt finer than any silk she had worn or sheet she had laid upon. She was always amazed that perfection was attainable in everything in Eden. And she was going to take it all.
A single tear traced its way down her ivory cheek as she knelt before Adam on the earth's floor and took in the despair that had laid rest in his soul and emanated through his eyes. Then she knew the reason she saw them so clearly was because they mirrored her own. As Adam reached up to wipe away the tear with the pad of his thumb, she was lost within that single act of kindness. When was the last time anyone had been kind to her? It was her turn to have her breath catch in the back of her throat as she leaned in to him. Her head just tilted at an angle that afforded her nose to barely graze his and yet their lips not touch. She could feel his warm breath tickle her upper lip and what was only a breathless moment seemed an eternity.
The moment was shattered by passion as Adam took the lead and pressed his lips to hers and she felt his hands reach the back of her head and intertwine with her golden locks. The moment his lips kissed the nape of her neck, she forgot about Eden, she forgot about her own selfishness-if for but a moment, as the weight of him on top of her crushed her wings beneath her and the snap brought her back
