Tips for water feature landscaping

The sound of moving water has a soothing effect. That is one of the reasons that water features are so popular in landscaping.

The inclusion of a water feature into your landscaping plan can be as simple as having a small tub with a fountain moving the water softly. You can add a few water plants and "voila" you have a nice addition to enjoy.

If you have the time and want to invest in a bigger project, a garden pool may be just the ticket for you. It requires a lot more effort, but the rewards are much greater.

The first decision is whether to use a molded liner, or a flexible liner. The molded liners are good, but the hole must be tailored exactly to the size of the liner and if the liner is not properly supported at all points, it can crack and lose water.

Molded liners can be adapted to different shapes, making the pool more interesting. Their are plastics available, but butyl rubber liners can last up to 20 years and are a good choice.

After selecting the liner material, you will need to select the best location for the pool. Keep in mind considerations such as traffic areas, soil types, surrounding vegetation and aesthetics. The location will need to be fairly level, or it will require much more work to make it work.

When shaping the pool, be careful not to exceed the size that your liner will cover, leaving enough to form a small "apron" at the surface. You will need to have placed padding under the liner to keep roots, pebbles or other materials from piercing the liner. These can be purchased, or you may substitute materials on hand.

After inserting the liner and smoothing it out, you should place decorative rocks over the "apron" to secure the liner. Place the rocks attractively so that the shapes are pleasing to the eye and look like a natural setting.

Before filling with water, you can place containerized plants in the bottom or around the edges, being careful to keep the potential water level in mind. A selection of water lilies, lotus, arrow leaf, etc. will enhance the beauty of the pond.

You can also add to the beauty of the pond by building a waterfall. This can be constructed with rock and pond liner material, or you can purchase a molded plastic unit that can be easily installed.

A pump will be required to circulate water from the pond to the waterfall. Be sure that it is big enough to do the job, but not too big. You can use connections to also service sprays, fountains, etc. from the same pump or use auxiliary pumps.
