Most swearing in ceremonies are not of a religious nature. In this era when the debate on separation of religion and state is so common i wonder why nobody pushed this thing. To swear by the Bible would mean one believed in all that it says and would not act or say anything to the contrary.Judging by political and judicial events anybody can tell its just one of those routines.Which brings me to the true believers of the Bible.Aren't they being duped when all manner of people use their holy book to swear? Aren't they more likely to believe what those swearing atest to? But on the flip side the believers could be taking it to be a vote of confidence in their religion.
In separating church, state and other wings of swearing there should be devised a mode before each occasion. An appropriate totem should be found and used for swearing in.And then there should be penalties for having lied under such oaths.High school students can swear by their breaks and lose them if they are found to have lied, politicians should swear by their office and lose their mandate if they betray those offices.Priests should swear by their robes and walk without them (naked) if they betray them.
I thought the lawyers should be made to swear by their practicing certificates and lose them if they mislead the courts knowing they didn't represent the truth. Those are just a few.
The Bible has suffered allegiance in the most blatant ways possible. Its an insult to the message it bears when people who don't necessarily believe in it swear by it. This could also be the reason why many of them wont bother adhering to ethics or tell the truth. They swore by something that meant nothing to them.
Try telling some parents to swear by their children's health and you would know the Bible is just a heap of papers to most of those who swear by it.
Among the Kamba people of Kenya, people who are feared to be witches are forced to take oaths and swear by their lives and those of their family members.Should they ever practice the dirty games again, death will come knocking.Given death will come knocking to every homestead at some point regardless of whether you are a pastor or a witch, some people are known to flee their homes to avoid such rituals. When did you ever see one refuse to swear by the bible?Maybe a few but the majority dont think twice about it.
Seeing how less value is attached to the Bible in swearing in,it would be a honorable thing to free it of that task. When i was little my parents told me i could never burn a piece of the Bible, even a torn page.I haven't to my knowledge. But if i have to save my skin even after swearing by the same bible i probably will try.Thats an awkward position to put the Bible.Give it a break.
