At first glance, Bubbleworld looks like a fun game that would be a nice five minute break, and this is exactly what it turned out to be. I don't think that the game would be able to hold my interest for the seventy levels in the full version, but then 30-something male gamers probably aren't the target market. I can see it being a lot more enthralling for girls younger than ten as this seems to be who the graphics are aimed at.
The game play itself is straightforward. There are a number of bubbles on the screen in which characters are trapped. The aim is to click on two bubbles containing the same character which will cause the bubbles to pop and the characters to be freed. This needs to be repeated until all the bubbles are popped. Occasionally, one of the bubbles will start to flash which means that the bubble is in danger of breaking and needs to be priority. Click characters that don't match, and you get a large "No" flashing across the screen and a small time penalty.
The graphics are cartoonish, which works well for the style of game. There are a lot of bright colours and sparkly animations which do add to the appeal. The sound may get a little annoying as the tune used did start to get a little repetitive. This, however is not too bad as you can turn the music off and then listen to your favourite tunes instead.
The game doesn't feel all that original as it plays like a memory match game without the memory part. There isn't anything to keep you playing past the first few levels as the game is made more difficult by requiring more matches to be made. It can be quite tricky at times due to the number of bubbles and the fact that some of the characters look similar, but this doesn't make the game more interesting, just more difficult.
All in all the game was alright for wasting 5 to 10 minutes, but i definitely won't be paying for the full version. If I wanted to play something mindless and repetitive, there are plenty of games packaged in with Windows (minesweeper and solitaire spring to mind). It rates a 2/5 as I think there is a market for it, just not one I'd be interested in.
