Iguazu Falls , Misiones , Argentina
This is the region of the great rivers, of the humid tropics, of the red earth and the magnificent jungle. A virgin jungle full of gigantic trees, and extraordinary flora and fauna. Great Waters, in Guaran language Iguazu, which overflow with a roar in one of the wonders of the world, the Falls of Iguazu. The precence of man remains amongst all this glorious Nature in the ruins of Jesuit missions which have been declared The Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Situated in the National Park Iguazu near Puerto Iguazu City , these spectacular falls lie just east of the confluence of the Iguazu and Paran rivers. At least 5000 cubic m of water per second plunge the 70m into the abyss below. If they look familiar, it's because they were the supporting actors in the film The Mission; appropriately, the area has historic ruins of Jesuit missions which also draw many visitors. San Ignacio Min, built in a style of architecture known as 'Guaran baroque', is especially popular. Above the falls, the waters are suitable for canoeing, kayaking and other water sports. The surrounding park is home to 55,000 hectares of pristine subtropical rainforest, with abundant wildlife and plant species.
The Falls of Iguazu.
18 Kms. from Puerto Iguazu are "The Great Waters" with 275 falls in the shape of a half moon plummeting down from a heigth of 70 metres into the Garganta del Diablo (the Devil's throat), a gorge where the tumultous water make multiple rainbows. A network of walks, paths, bridges and fligths of steps allows one to approach the falls. The best time of the year to visit is from May to November.
The Iguazu National Park.
This park protects the falls, 2.000 species of vegetation and 400 species of birds and wild animals (parrots, jaguars and caimans amongst others). Two organized day routes leave from Puerto Iguazu and go thougth the park above the falls. The upper route reaches the "Garganta del Diablo". The lower route follows paths thougth the rain forest which go beneath some of the falls and offers a close look at vegetation and the animals. The San Martn Island can be
reached by boat.
