near Yogyakarta. These have all caused great stress personally and economically on the people of Indonesia, including the Chinese Indonesians.
Changing Attitudes:
After over thirty years of problems between the Indonesians and the Chinese Indonesians problems still exists. Indonesians' still hold prejudice toward the Chinese Indonesians. In 2003, the government of Indonesia began allowing the Chinese New Year recognizing it as a national holiday, it is now recognized and celebrated; a sign that the government is trying to pull the country together as a whole. In doing so Indonesia has given the country a boost in the economy helping restaurants, small shops, hotels and other business to survive, and prosper. It is important to keep your lodging in the congested area or the business district; visitors will find transportation and restaurants in this area as well.
Finally, there are yet more signs that the bridges between Indonesians and Chinese Indonesians are slowly being mended. News broadcasts now have favorable stories
concerning the Chinese Indonesian, this has only come about in the last few years. Now there are television, radio and newspapers that have started popping up throughout Indonesia run and or owned by the Chinese. In addition, there are where 172 Chinese candidates that ran for public offices in 2006.
