Gears of War is a game that is not for the faint of stomach. The game manages to bring brutality to a whole new level in five acts and a wicked multiplayer component that is just so incredibly satisfying, that i, your reviewer doesn't even know how to put it into words...but here goes;
The game takes place several decades in the future, and opens as the main hero, Marcus Fenix is broken out of prison to help his old war buddies fend off the Locust invasion. And they ain't your grandmas locusts either. These bad ass aliens decided to pop out of the underground one morning to "Kill the ground walkers" and you are thrown right into the middle of the chaos.
The games campaign is fairly decent in length, the graphics are sweet, the soundtrack is perfect and the controls are smooth and comfortable, but for all the things I'm used to mentioning in a game review, the one I'm happiest to focus on for once is the downright CRAZY game play. I honestly don't know how to elaborate in a way that i think will properly show how damn good this game is, all i know is that i start a campaign, set the difficulty to Hardcore, and an hour into it, i literally have to pause the game to catch my breath and slow my heart rate down.
It most likely has something to do with the ingenious cover system the folks at EPIC have concocted which has you hugging corners while trying to snipe dudes on turrets while fending of these annoying wretches that jump around and melee you to death while trying to keep your squad alive and thats just the first five minutes!
the game also has this nifty little thing called the chainsaw bayonet, which is great for chopping your enemies into a million bite size chunks when they get too close! and trust me, that will get VERY fun, VERY fast. I don't even know what the guys at microsoft and EPIC did to make this game so good, it really makes all other shooters (First or third person) seem somehow "lazy" in their production. These guys have managed to mash together beautiful graphics and environments, with pulse pounding, heart stopping action, with an intensely addictive multiplayer that is sure to compete with the Halo servers for network traffic for years to come.
After your done with this game, you'll surely find it stupid, as i did, that all developers don't try harder to reach this level of quality. Gears of war has not only raised the bar for other games that follow, but has launched the bar into space, so i say good luck to the competition out here, because this one is a tough one to beat. And the sad part is that other developers are probably playing Gears during their off time...so there you go.
I normally have lots of good points for and against games, but in this case i can only be a biased reviewer and tell you how much a adore this game. all i can advise you to do is pay whatever they're charging for it and buy the damned thing, and you will be thanking me later.
Seriously, it's one of the best games EVER
My Score: 15/10 - buy this game, or hang your head in shame!
