If your a new player or your significant other is involved in the sport or maybe you just like to watch it but never really know what there talking about. These are words that are useful and you might not know.
Icing - When the puck carrier shoots the puck untouched down the length of the ice starting behind the center or red line
Offsides - When a player enters the attacking zone before the puck and then touches it
Dekes- Also known among players as dangles referring to moves made to fake the opposing player many times involving putting the puck through their legs
Sticks Blade and Curve - The sticks blade and curve depends on your dominant hand. Left handed people generally use left handed sticks. The curve is the degree in which the blade actually is bent
Lighting the Lamp - In hockey when a goal is scored a red lamp is lit behind the glass to signal a goal is scored, so lighting the lamp is referring to a scored goal
Back checking - An offenseman following the play back in to his own zone to make a defensive play
The Crease - This is the blue area in front of the net used by the goalie to keep his bearing on the net
Blue line - The blue lines on the ice which signal each teams zones
Red line - The center line on the ice which is where the opening face off is dropped and the line which determines icing
Goal line- The two thin red lines at either end of the ice where each net is placed
Slap Shot or Slapper - The most powerful shot in hockey, involves bring the stick up to waist height or above and coming through the puck
One timer- This is a slap shot that is taken when receiving a pass before handling it
Wrist Shot or Wrister - Generally the most accurate shot involves taking the puck back and pushing it forward then snapping your wrists forward to make forward velocity
Snap Shot or Snapper- A shot used to catch the goalie off guard taken by snapping your hands and rotating the stick while carrying the puck and does not use a wind up
Backhand - A shot that comes off the back of the sticks blade
Sweaters - An oldschool term used for the jerseys players are wearing
