For a movie to become a favorite, it must stand the test of time. You must be able to relate the movie to your own life, in some way. And, you must be able to watch that movie over and over again without getting tired of it.
My favorite movie is OFFICE SPACE (1999) directed by Mike Judge, and starring Ron Livingston, Jennifer Anniston, David Herman, and Ajay Naidu. Who can't relate to a movie about a bunch of people who hate their job? I probably have watched that film over 100 times, and it still makes me laugh every time.
Ask 100 different people what their favorite movie to watch is, and most of them will name a comedy. Why? Because comedies make us laugh, and laughing feels good. It's not so much fun to watch Titanic over and over again.
People love movies for more reasons than the laughter they provide. For any particular reason, we can relate to the movie in a positive way. Movies that evoke negative feelings or bad movies are rarely experiences anybody wants to repeat. Here are some of the reasons we love movies:
~ WE LOVED THE SETTING: I really enjoy ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY (2004) because it is set in San Diego, my hometown. I always enjoy movies set in New York, and I try to watch YOU'VE GOT MAIL(1998), starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan every holiday season.
~ WE LOVED THE BOOK: Sometimes watching the movie after reading the book is a disappointment. But other times it brings the story to life in a new way. I enjoyed watching the film based on the Nicholas Sparks film, THE NOTEBOOK (2004), starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The movie P.S. I LOVE YOU (2007), starring Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler, contained a story line that was different from the book, but was enjoyable nonetheless.
~ WE LOVE THE ACTORS: Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite actors, so LEGALLY BLONDE (2001), SWEET HOME ALABAMA (2002), and JUST LIKE HEAVEN (2005) were all enjoyable.
~ THE MOVIE IS JUST SO DUMB ITS FUNNY: Jim Carrey's role in Dumb and Dumber comes to mind. I've seen that a few times, and it's still pretty much hilarious.
