Why I use WinRAR

Pkzip, WinZip and WinRAR. Ring a bell? I used to remember the times where every kilobytes (Kb) of disk space were important. File compression was command-line where only the geeks would attempt to squeeze all the available bytes of games and programs into boxes of diskettes. I had to test out the best parameters in Pkzip to compress those files into the smallest possible format.

Soon, the entry of graphical Windows, WinZip was preferred over Pkzip by me. I did not have to remember or type long command-line with complicated parameters to zip up my files. The ease of graphical user interface (GUI) had eliminated the need of command-line. I could also select and view different files in their compressed form.

In time, Kb of disk space had turned into megabytes (Mb). I was hungry for better compression and speed. The large amount of disk space had made speed a crucial factor beside compression. Compressing Mb of disk space would take hours instead of the usual minutes. Boxes of diskettes became stacks of compact disks (CD). By word of mouth from other techie friend, I came to know about WinRAR.

By then, I had already dabbled in different compression software in the search for speed and compression. To me, WinRAR was just another such software in the market. Therefore, changing to another compression software was not really on my top priority list. It would take months later before I really tried WinRAR from which another friend of mine conveniently passed it to me.

During the test run, I was amazed by the speed of WinRAR compression. The speed was unlike all other compression utilities I had come across. I also find using the GUI was a breeze too. In addition, I could obtain all these powerful features from the small compact WinRAR. You could say that I had fell in love with WinRAR from that day onwards. This utility has become one of my all-time favourite software to bring it around with me. This is become I am delighted to pass a copy to my friends to try it out.

Before passing it on, I will always tell my friends the three great things that I love about WinRAR: Speed, great compression and the small disk size of the software.
