The UK is a fascinating place and one that I have lived in for 42 years but only recently started exploring. Its been delightful and all on my doorstep no busy airports and baggage claims to negotiate. My top two places for a tranquil noise free weekend of peace and calm with great little finds for food,drink and adventures are:

1) Keswick, The English Lake District

Great for walking, real ales and absolute calm. Book ahead
The Highfield Hotel food is out of this world book the Old Chapel Room for a really romantic getaway.

2) Melfort, Nr Oban West Scotland

Get a cottage at Melfort Village (type in google for details on booking and site map . Try self catering Oban if no luck. But book first.) The scenery is stunning and will take your breath away. Book the three island tour from Oban to Mull, Iona and Staffa. Its the adventure of a life time. Fingals cave on Staffa will never be forgotten. Eat on Melfort villages site At the Shower of Herring and try the seafood! It will not disappoint.
