What a question! Is there such a place called the United States of America?
Question is what is a true American? An American is an amalgamation of all the cultures from where ever in the world someone was from before even Columbus arrived here.
Where ever we descended from as to family lines of heredity if we were born here in America then we can call ourselves American, we can call ourselves American even if we were not born here, if one desires to go through the process of Naturalization to become a citizen of America or the United States of America, one and the same. Seems perhaps that the United States part of it is left out in some way, lately.
Being an American is the realization of being able to live freely, in a Democracy in which everyone has the ability to be equal under the Constitution of the United States of America, which our forefathers wrote in order that people who come here can prosper in freedom without the rule of a king or emperor or whatever else one is able to call the head of a group who follows orders. We can argue that some cultures have a democracy under the rule of a king or what have you, though in truth it is not freedom, it is the ability to be free as long as you follow the rules, or control.
America has the rule of law, which has been written and amended by the legislature and government, meaning the people who vote for the people we have in the various positions in government. In other words government of the people by the people, not government of the people by the government, which is where the difference lies in the case of actual freedom. Seems many today forget that fact also, we are not ruled by the government, we are self ruled, that is if we have the capacity and initiative to be responsible to ourselves and others without having someone tell us what to do, when to do it, how to do it, where to do it, I could go on though the point of course is we are free as American to do whatever we like as long as it is within the rule of law, and if it is not then the legal system takes action to stop whatever illegalities appear, though the justice system may not always work perfectly, it is the best in the world. Follow the law here in America and you never even need to talk to anyone within the legal system.
In my own opinion I believe an American is someone who respects the right to be free, along with respecting the rights of others to be free however they wish to be free. Take for instance the Eagle, which represents our freedom,
