Animal rights (and animal lefts, for that matter) have not gone far enough. There is still a long way to go before all species are treated with compassion. This is one reason why animal rights still marches on, and hopes to get human rights activists and environmentalists to join in. Animal rights activists hope that every person who cares about reducing the suffering and hopelessness on this planet.
The Ancient Views
Ancient wisdom from aboriginal cultures taught that we are all one. The "we" was not restricted to just the human race. "We" meant the land, the water, the animals and each other. When you pare everything down, everything is pretty much made of the same stuff. And we all are dependent on each other not only for basic survival, but for making life more beautiful and more worth living.
Hopefully, one day, there will be a world where species-ism no longer exists. There will be as much outrage over a puppy dying needlessly in a laboratory as there would be a human baby dying in a lab. There will be as much outrage for one species to go extinct as there would be for the human race to go extinct.
The Modern Views
Today, I can find no less than three pet stores in my immediate area that sell puppies stocked from inhumane puppy mills. In my own street, there are people who have impulsively bought puppies from these stores and are now dealing with the consequences. I wouldn't be surprised to find some of those impulse purchases be abandoned one the cute phase wears off.
As you can see, puppy mills are one of my "pet peeves". This is because the suffering in puppy mills is so needless. You can't even argue that the puppies are being raised for food or for clothing or for medical research "that will eventually benefit humans". Puppy mills are an industry that thrives on misery.
Those Who Don't Like Animal Rights
Why do some people feel threatened by animal rights campaigns? Some animal rights activists are extreme, but you find extreme people in any group. Most animal rights activists would rather appeal to the caring part of humanity rather than brow-beat them into submission.
Do they feel jealous that some other creature is getting some attention? This is another thing that animal rights activists have to work on. Why do people think that in this day think that creatures that can feel pain do not feel pain?
For those who argue that animal rights activists should be making better use of their time working for human beings, we are. Without nature, without animals, without all of the diversity of the world, our species will be left an empty husk.
