When searching for an exciting, exotic locale for a great family vacation, look no further than the U.S. Although technically, Puerto Rico is part of the States, it's like a whole different world, a tropical paradise with plenty to delight every member of the family. AND you won't have to bother with passports and visas if you're an American citizen.
A great site for the family is El Morro, a 500-year-old fortress atop San Juan. Adults will appreciate the fort's history, and the kids will love exploring the labyrinth of halls, dungeons, and stairways, and climbing to the tops of the lookout towers.
Another family favorite is the Luis A. Ferre Scince Center in Bayamon. The 42-acre park has fascinating science exhibits, several museums, a children's playground, and a small zoo the kids will enjoy. Best of all, it's very inexpensive.
When visiting Puerto Rico, take the time to see the unspoiled little island of Vieques, just 6 miles offshore from Humacao. Wild horses roam freely all over the island, and the beaches are all perfect: white sand, blue water, secluded, and surrounded by palms and tropical flowers. The best beach for kids is Media Luna. Take the family to see the glow-in-the-dark Bio Bay at night, where millions of microorganisms create delicate neon patterns in the water.
If your gang enjoys exploring, take them to Rio Camuy Cave Park near Arecibo to see the 170-ft high caverns, or to travel to the bottom of a sink hole on a tram. Or perhaps they'd enjoy the colorful birds and flowers, waterfalls, and lush vegetation of the El Yunque Rain Forest, located about an hour from San Juan.
Your whole family will enjoy a snorkeling tour at Icacos Cay, near Fajardo, where a boat will take you out to the reefs. You'll see several species of colorful corals and multidues of brightly colored tropical fish that call the reef home. The boat will take you to a secluded beach for lunch before your return to the dock. Kids of all ages will absolutely love this tour: the fish, the beach lunch, and the boat ride itself.
When in Puerto Rico, you have to spend some time in Old San Juan; it should be a requirement! Adults will enjoy the history, the scenery, and the world-class restaurants, and the kids will love feeding the pigeons at Pigeon Park, checking out the action at the waterfront promenade, and the Children's Museum, with its three floors of interactive learning, puppet shows, and rooftop garden area. Teens will enjoy shopping for the latest fashions in Calle del Cristo's trendy boutiques, and everyone will be amazed by the old-world atmosphere.
Puerto Rico is a wonderful vacation destination for families. There's plenty to keep everyone entertained with its unique offering of activities and sights. Escape the usual theme parks, shopping malls, and fast food, and come to Puerto Rico!
