2. LAKE TAHOE: The freshwater Lake Tahoe sits partially in California and partially in Nevada. Enjoy a ski vacation in the winter or a mountain vacation in the summer. Your kids will love Squaw Valley, CA, home of the 1960 winter Olympics. Popular ski resorts include Mt. Rose, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Diamond Peak, and Alpine Meadows. On the Nevada side, you can play slots or blackjack at Harrahs or Hard Rock Casino. In the summer, the whole family will love rafting down the Truckee River. Tip: In north lake tahoe, a vacation rental package may be a cheaper option than a hotel.

3. WASHINGTON D.C.: Have you seen the Washington Monument, visited the Smithsonian Institute, or hiked in the Great Falls Park? If not, you should visit Washington D.C. Everyone will love Mount Vernon, the 500 acre estate of George Washington, located in northern Virginia. A vacation package encompassing some of the top destinations may save you money.

4. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: Everyone should visit Las Vegas at least once. Family friendly things to do include riding to the top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas (half the size of the real Eiffel Tower), seeing the shark exhibit at Mandalay Bay, and visiting the FAO Schwartz store at the Caesars Forum Shops.

5. SAN DIEGO, CA: "America's Finest City" is a top destination year around. The water is colder than Hawaii or Florida, but you can go snorkeling in La Jolla. Visit North America's only Legoland theme park in nearby Carlsbad. If you should happen to come on a rainy day, visit the Scripps Birch Aquarium at UCSD to see sharks, seahorses, jellyfish, and hundreds of other marine life species. Of course, no visit to San Diego is complete without a trip to the world famous San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park. Accommodations are most expensive in the summer. You will get better rates on non ocean view rooms.
