It is true that some dogs will be good alarm systems. However there are a few fatal (literally in some cases) flaws.
Not all dogs are good alarm systems. Some are scared of most things, some are too aggressive (you may think that this is good, but not always), and some are just too friendly.
There are those dogs who are scared of everything. I'm pretty darn sure that if a crook broke into your house and you had a dog like this then they would more likely go and run under the bed rather than tell you. Sure if you notice you will realize that something has spooked the poor thing, but if you've had the dog for a long time you will be used to this and think that it is just "the wind outside".
Some dogs (like mine) are very aggressive. In some situations this can be a good thing, but if you have a dog like mine it isn't. My dog doesn't know when to stop. I've seen her try to attack people. I have no doubt that if she got them on the ground she wouldn't let up. She would either kill them or permanently injure them. This may all sound good right? I mean the guy is sneaking into your house, shouldn't he be punished? I totally agree with you, but you can get sued for this. Not only that, but you will more than likely lose. I've learned about it in school. If someone breaks into your house and get injured they can sue. If they were to shoot themselves, they could sue and win because you didn't have your gun properly stowed. This holds true to your dog too.
On the other hand though, some dogs are just to nice. I was once watching the show "It Takes a Thief" on the Discovery Channel. The show hires a crook to break into someone's home to show them how well (or how poorly) protected their house is. On this particular episode the family had a dog and they said that he was a "guard dog". When the guy went in the dog ran up to him and with tail wagging licked him. He followed the guy around the whole house not making an attempt to stop him. Some guard dog.
Personally I love dogs, so I suggest you go get a shaggy ball of love for yourself, but don't let him replace you alarm system.
