I remember the Andy Griffith Show quite well. In fact, I still catch some reruns. I do not think it is possible to be a baby boomer and not remember the towns people of Mayberry. Andy Griffith brilliantly portrayed Sheriff Andy Taylor. Ronnie Howard was "Opie," and Aunt Bee (the credits stated "Bee" as opposed to "Bea.") was lovingly brought to life by Frances Bavier.
Of course no one can forget Don Knotts as Barney Fife.
Week after week we would tune in and invite the lovable characters of Mayberry into our homes. I suppose, upon reflection, the corny ambiance of the show could have taken the ratings in the other direction, but they didn't. We loved the innocence, we loved the simplicity, and we loved each of the characters. Not just in the 1960's! Odd as it may seem to some, the characters of the show became like family.
To add to the charm of the citizens of Mayberry, there would be the occasional visits from The Darling Family. These episodes always involved Andy trying to figure a way around a voodoo hex that had been placed by the Darlings. Also making an occasional appearance was Earnest T. Bass.
Most episodes featured the town folk. Many a scene was shot on that swing on Andy's porch. The other popular scenes were the courthouse, Main Street, and Andy's home.
The show itself was a catalyst for many a career! Ron Howard went on to become a successful director, winning 2 Oscars, 17 wins and 30 nominations for other awards such as the Golden Globe. Don Knotts won 5 Primetime Emmy's and he had countless voice characters and comedy leads in movies. Andy Griffith won 4 awards including the People's choice and the Legend Award. Mr. Griffith went on to portray the loveable Matlock. These are just a few examples of how the Andy Griffith show launched careers.

Some of my favorite episodes;
Man in the Middle; Barney and Thelma Lou argue, but quickly make up. However, this argument leads to friction between Andy, Barney, Thelma Lou and Helen.
Andy and Helen have their Day; Andy and Helen try to slip away for a peaceful picnic but have constant interruptions from Goober, Barney and others.
Briscoe declares for Aunt Bee; Briscoe Darling falls in love with Aunt Bea after she reads a poem.
The Rumor ; When Barney sees Andy kissing Helen in a jewelry store, he gets the idea that they are engaged. He starts planning an engagement party and gets the whole town involved just to find out that Helen was buying a graduation present for her niece.
There are not enough wonderful things that can be said about the Andy Griffith Show. Even now, when I get a chance, I will look for the reruns, settle back, and enjoy "going back home."
