Hmmm... two good reviews, I simply had to pick it up and thanks to good old Ammy it was on my doorstep in seven days. I don't like to say 'simply couldn't put it down' I mean it sounds so corny doesn't it? What do you mean couldn't put it down? I bet if your little lady walked into the room with that rare glint in her eyes you'd put the bloody book down, just as quick as you could. Man! you wouldn't even look for the bookmark let alone remember what page you are on.
So what did I think? Well... I couldn't put the damn book down. I kid you not! The characters captivated me. Vicky Mackenzie the widow, turned temporary prostitute to the nasty stop at nothing Donavan Smith and the quiet man in the background Bob Heggie (Did he rob the bank or not?) Three characters well defined by Mr Scott, surely a master at his trade. And those children, Elissa and her escape from Paris whilst wrapping her little brother in cotton wool, protecting him from the evil Mr Smith. Run! I wanted to yell from the comfort of my bed on more than one occasion. The short chapter - A few words - simply a masterpiece. Scott's book is so good it could go down as one of the classic thrillers of all time, certainly the best to come out of Newcastle since 'Get Carter'.
And the plot, and the way it flows and jumps from Paris to Newcastle to Spain and Cannes and eventually back to Newcastle again, each destination wonderfully depicted by Ken Scott, a one time native from that proud northern outpost of England. Scott pulls and pushes and tatalises you every turn of the page, his yarn, for that's what it is, pulls you around each corner making you believe that this could have actually taken place. That's the secret of a good book... believability. How many times do you take a good book on board, enjoy it, and then say to yourself... yeah... but it couldn't really happen could it. Well, I'm telling you this book is different, it reminds me of Harlan Coben in the early days.
The book will go on my top five list for 2007, if you push me it might make the top two. Now where's this Ken Scott's e-mail, I'm gonna make him an offer he cannot refuse.
