The best ways to avert a cold

The common cold is one of the most irritable things to have. Did you know that the common cold is the most common illness in humans? It is also the most common cause to miss work or school. While it is impossible to completely prevent the spread of the cold there are steps that you can take to reduce you and your family's chances.

Colds are caused by viral infections. With hundreds of different viruses, symptoms may vary. Viruses that cause colds are spread through multiple ways. The main culprit, a tiny droplet of mucous. This droplet comes out of the infected persons nasal passages or mouth and is distributed into the air that we breathe or on the door knob that you touch. This droplet is then absorbed through the mouth, nose and eyes.

The key to preventing the common cold is simple. Wash your hands. Hand washing is the single most effective way to keep from catching or spreading a cold. If you do not have access of soap and water purchase a small bottle of hand sanitizer to carry with you. Hand sanitizer is alcohol based and kills 99.9% of germs.

Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze. Use a barrier such as a tissue or toilet paper to keep those germs contained. Although a handkerchief is sanitary they are convenient to use, but please dispose of them or wash them frequently.

When it comes to the common cold avoid sharing with people who already have a cold. Sharing foods, drinks, utensils, dishes, and cups increases your chances of catching the cold yourself. Use disposable items such as cups and throw them away after usage. It will decrease the chance of someone else picking up and using that cup. Do not use the same wash cloths and towels that a sick person uses. Have a set aside for them and them only. Clean up after your sick one. Spray Lysol on counters, phones, door handles, refrigerator handles, toilet and sinks. If your sick one is a child, wash their toys.

To all the smokers in the world, we know you do not want hear it but cigarette smoke irritates the airway. People who are sick are already coughing and smoking weakens your lungs and increases your chance for infections.

The common cold is more of a nuisance then anything. However, if you remember to at least wash your hands consistently after a contact with a sick one then you have already decreased your chances or spreading or catching the cold.
