Reflections: Why are people so judgmental?

by Elaina Wicks

Created on: January 21, 2008

"Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone;" a statement that has been resonated throughout our history by biblical teachings. Whether you are an avid Christian or of independent belief, this statement applies to all who walk this earth. Perhaps hypocrisy is an inherent character trait, at one time or another, we have all judged.

The media is a fierce catalyst in swaying the public towards judgment; mockery waiting in the shadows, another man's failure is engrossing. Our freedoms of expression used to defile the lives of others. Why is it more entertaining to see someone fall? It is human nature to be slightly green, everyone striving to be better than the other. More than likely, it is jealousy that motivates judgment. If we judge another, then we can mask our own insecurities.

What makes someone better than another? Is it our religious associations or how much we contribute to charity? Is it our ranking in society? Is our annual income symbolic of our accomplishments? There are millions of hard workers in the world, why should a rich man receive more recognition? With so many variances of opinion, there could never be a true gauge. A self-righteous disposition is shallow. Even the Bible frowns on a boaster.

Why are so many of us hate-mongers? Why do we get so enraged when others view life from a different perspective? Do the convictions of another person effect which path you will follow in life? Often times, some become so disillusioned by their own preconceived opinions and beliefs, that they become fanatical. Some so much so, their fanaticism turns to violence. What went wrong in the minds of some of the "pro-lifers" who decided to "rid the world of baby killers" by bombing abortion clinics? What did those people do to them? Maniacal hypocrisy, people so adamant that abortion was murder that they themselves murdered. Insanity.

Everyone perceives perfection differently. With such diversity surrounding us, no two minds think alike. We should embrace our differences and pay more attention to our individual flaws and shortcomings, not seek refuge in others. If you truly desire acceptance and understanding, you must first learn to give it in return.
