Major education issues in the 2008 presidential election

Why don't politicians say anything anymore! All around me I hear complaints about the lack of substance in the political speeches of candidates on both sides of the isle! Having watched the proceedings carefully I have to agree. They do talk a lot, but hardly say anything at all, anything substantial that is. On deeper look though I can see a few reasons, which even make sense!

Reason One: The unenlightened electorate! As I will show in Reason Two, anytime a politician opens her/his mouth they are taking a risk. Given the low intellectual factor of many voters today, it is economically a better plan that Politicians say only the bare minimum required to get the vote, and thus reduce their risk of attack. They must appeal to the emotional level! "I'll get your Job Back""I'll get you a better job".I'll bring home the troops and guarantee world peace" "I am woman" "I am Black" "I'm a war hero" "I'm born again" "I'm against Bush" etc. Claims that on deeper analysis are either ridiculous or irrelevant, do appeal to the unenlightened electorate, thus though low risk, they bring a good return! A lengthy plan or deep moral discussion on the issues is just asking for trouble!

Reason Two: Hypersensitivity. Given the hyper sensitive nature of America, and the word dissection that takes place, it is no wonder what politicians say is so, well .bland! Spicy, aggressive comments, can lead to huge problems. Case in point Senator Clinton. While she is the last person on earth I would vote for, (well maybe second to last, since Osama is still at large), and even though I would not be surprised to hear that her favorite number is 666, I still think she was unfairly treated on the Martin Luther King Jr. deal. I have heard and reheard her now famous quote. To the intellectually honest it is clear that her point was in no way intended to denigrate Martin Luther King Jr. nor his life's work. Her point was to bring relevance to the Presidential race, by demonstrating that great leaders need help of other great leaders to bring about change. Her inference of course, was she would be that great leader. Risky yes, and it cost her! But, the claims that her comments were racist are ridiculous in the extreme. However the huge uproar demonstrates the current nature of our hyper-vigilant, win at all costs, political mindset.

So, while it is true that we are hearing a lot more about a lot less, we are getting what we deserve! Wouldn't it be nice to find some new Teflon leaders who could speak their minds, give us some depth, and still survive! Maybe Jefferson had it right about an unenlightened electorate? Anyone for a voting rights intelligence test?
