Common mistakes made by small business owners

Not doing enough research. This is the most common mistake for small home businesses.

You get so excited about a great business idea, there is nothing going to stop you, so you barrel forward and skip the research part. You now run into a road block of other businesses that offer the same product or service that you do. Now you are competing with many others in an area that has become saturated. So you are now faced with doing the service or creating the product for next to nothing in order to compete.

Before you start your business, do some research, look up other companies doing the same thing as you want to. Phone them up, ask for prices, get a feel for who and what is out there. Could you work from a different area? Who are your potential customers? Should you be looking in the big city for your customers or out in the rural areas?.. What type of money do your potential customers need to be making to want or need your service.

For example, if you are going to offer a grass cutting service in an area that is all condominium apartments, or small fixed income houses, you are not going to get many customers. You would need to examine the market in the suburbs where people are too busy to cut their lawns, and will probably make enough money to hire you.

Find out how much your service or product is going for, is it a rate you can live with?. Can you compete and still make money? Figure out a way to provide your product or service with very little expenses. Can you work from home, or do you need to rent a unit or industrial space? Will your township allow you to have big pieces of equipment on your driveway, some towns take exception to this. Can you have customers coming to your house, or should you rent an office?

Also make sure to do your paperwork, figure out exactly what the expenses are going to be to provide that service or product. Get yourself a simple computer accounting program, and get familiar with it, and keep it up to date, so you can quickly look up your income or expenses or both. Once you have all your research done, you will be more familiar with what is out there, and more likely to prosper.
