NFC Championship playoff game analysis: New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers

by Sherry Bentley-Short

Created on: January 21, 2008

The NFC Championship game left me with feelings of being cheated. We all knew going into the game that it was going to be anybodies game after the weather leveled the playing field. As Packers fans we ere on a roll we were flying high and Brett was having the season of his life. Even superman can feel zero degree temperatures and thirty five below with the wind chill left even the announcers with red noses and numb hands. The weather was not the only factor that led to the Giants winning. Brett was not on his game, the offense killed the Pack.

This was a good game by anybodies standards. It was close and in the end the Giants wanted it more. There are some of us that believe that when the field goal attempt was hooked with four seconds left on the clock that the gust of wind that caused it was Vince Lombardi's own personal contribution to the game. That being said this is what I saw:

Jacobs - This Giant in more ways than one was key to the Giants running game. It was taking three and four Packers to pull him down.

Manning- Was on his game he only threw one ugly pass the entire game.

Tynes- After hooking two field goal attempts manages to pull off a forty seven yard kick to win the game in over time.

Burris- Produced, having to fight for every single inch of his 154 yards.

Favre - With the exception of a great completed pass to driver, Favre was not playing well at all.

Driver- Running back for 90 yards gave all fans a mental highlight clip that will always be remembered.

We watched as these players used hot hands all night long and watched as Favre's hands slowly turned purple. Manning was intense during this match up. The Packers did not go to Driver as much as they generally do or can. Driver was covered all night long. Grant has been a driving force for the Packers this season was also not utilized much during this game. When it became clear that the passing game was not going to win it was when the Packers should have changed up the strategy. Gone to a running game using Grant much more than possible. An already injured Sam Madison didn't get near the pressure that some feel should have been applied.

It's hard for a cheese head like me to accept. We were out played out scored and over all just beat up on. It is the Giants time and there is always next year. There will now be all kinds of speculation is Brett coming back or is he finished. Only time will tell on that one. It does sadden me to see another football season passing and onto the days of ESPN classics until preseason starts all over again.
