Why wearing pajama pants in public is acceptable

by M W

I am a big fan of comfort over style, though I imagine pajama pants in general are not necessarily out of style. A loose fitting drawstring pant in a neutral tone, without the odd decorations, is quite acceptable for running errands in. Of course, bright colors may work just as well. It all depends on the attitude of the wearer. Self confidence can do wonders for even the most outdated attire.

Personally my entire pants collection has three pairs of jeans, a million pajama pants with odd decorations and crazy colors, and a few fuzzy, soft drawstring pants in Grey and black. I save the crazy and weird for home, and I often wear the comfortable and acceptable out. There is nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. Who wants to wear a dress suit out to take the dog for a walk through town? Not me. Who wants to pick up a carton of milk in a skirt and heels? Not me!

I like to grip on to the frivolous and meaningless comforts of life, and hold on with all that I have. If suddenly there was a law against comfort in public I would stay inside at all costs. Maybe dramatic, but certainly true. Socially acceptable is not my way. Social unacceptable either. So how do I balance? It's simple. I try to maintain a solid and unflappable air of confidence, you can't hurt me emotionally if you can't touch me emotionally, and I go about my life as is. To all those wishing to judge me for it, hurry along to your job, fill your bank accounts and ready yourself for the newest socially acceptable trend to hit the market next week, where suddenly your stylish outfit is out and your entire wardrobe is dated. I can't keep up personally, so why try when I am happy now?

Pajama pants are a necessity for me. I believe they can cheer up a dreadful day. I look forward to coming home so I can immediately change into them. Sometimes I wash a load of laundry specifically full of the comfortable materials so I can pick and choose which style I prefer for the day. Will it be the neon blue strips on purple, or the flannel red and blues? I am a creature of habit, and a creature of comfort. Nothing will take that away from me, even while I roam the public streets, battling ridicule.
