How to accelerate the speed of your PC

The speed of your PC or laptop is a key factor in driving your experience with your machine. When you buy a new PC you will see very good speed which graduallys decline over a period of time. There are several reasons for the decline some are related to the hardware while others are linked to the software.

But gone are the days when control of a machine's speed was beyond your means. Now there are numerous means and several tools to enhance your experience. Let us look at these options in two parts - Hardware and Software.

Let us look at the hardware options first.

1. Enhance the RAM
One of the primary drivers of speed on your PC is the Random Access Memory (RAM) which is like a temporary storage and is the place within a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be easily accessed. Therefore, higher the capacity of your RAM, faster is your computer and better your experience. For example, the latest operating system offering from Micrsoft called Vista works with 1GB but it works better with a 2GB RAM. If your PC is still on 256MB or 512MB then you are best advised to upgrade. The type of RAM you need is dependent on the nature of your motherboard. There are things like model of your existing RAM, number of pins etc. which determine what type of memory you need to purchase.

2. Increase the size of your hard disk
Prices of hard disk drives have gone down drastically. If your computer is old then chances are that its capacity is 20GB or 40GB. You can very easily upgrade the size to 80GB, 300GB or even 500 GB without spending a fortune. Look for deals on the internet and you will be surprised how affordable they are. Do check your motherboard compatibility on the right brand to purchase.

3. Get a high capacity external hard disk
Nowadays you get very affordable high capacity external hard drives. You may want to buy a 500GB drive where you can store all your backups and the stuff that you do not use regularly. Keep your computer as clean and uncluttered as possible. Besides, if your actual hard drive crashes, you have a back up.

4. Enhance the CPU
What is important is whether your motherboard is compatible for Intel or AMD, the two main types of processors popular in the market. Experts are divided on the best processors available in the market. Some swear by Intel while others are fiercely non-Intel. If you are an Intel fan then you need to find out the appropriate processors that will work for your pc.
