Ten years ago I would have said without a shadow of doubt a dog. Mans best friend is one of the most loyal and protective animals on the planet. Easily trained and generally obedient to a fault, they make exceptional guardians of your home and family. Unfortunately in today's litigious society, guard dogs are quickly becoming a liability.
While the technology of alarm systems has advanced considerably over the past decade, with numerous reputable alarm companies offering ever more competitive pricing on their packages, its more the law suites than the technology that have spelled an end to guard dogs. There have been numerous instances in which burglars have broken into residential and commercial buildings and rightly been attacked by an on premises guard dog. Many of these individuals who clearly had criminal intent in mind turned around and sued the owner of the premises for pain an injury as a result of the attacks by the guard dogs.
It is a sad testament to the times we live in that our court systems not only allowed the frivolous law suits to be heard, but in fact ruled in favor of a number of the plaintiffs. This is yet another sign of the recent shift of the protection of the victims rights to the protection of the offenders rights. An all too common occurrence that is seen in our society over the past many years in an ever increasing manner. It is difficult to fathom that you and your family can be victimized and terrorized in your own home by an assailant while at the same time having a lawsuit forced on you by the very person who broke into your house. In some instances incomprehensible levels of monetary rewards have been awarded to the burglars, in other cases the family pet and protects have been put down, deemed too violent.
Alarm systems today are primarily a tool of deterrence to crime, not an instrument of protection. Wiring your house to be monitored by an off site corporation is at best a reactionary response to the increase crime rate that is rampant throughout our country today. If the signs advertising the existence of the alarm system, and the visible presence of motion sensors, cameras and other obviously placed components does not deter a would-be thief from assailing your home, your best hope is the wailing alarm and assurance that help is on the way.
While the benefits of alarms systems tend to dissuade most peoples apprehension at living in a crime infested neighborhood, sometimes they simply are not enough
