Pain relief guide

Whether it's a pounding headache or a pulled muscle, nobody likes to be in pain. But before you attempt to diagnose and treat yourself, there are a few things you might want to consider.

Pain is the body's way of telling us that something is wrong, and it should never be ignored. Sometimes the cause of these pains may be obvious, as when we've been punched in the face! But at other times, they can begin quite suddenly, or happen over time and get progressively worse, as with a stomach ulcer.

There are two types of pain; acute and chronic. Acute pain comes on suddenly and is usually temporary. It can be caused by something as minor as a strained muscle or headache. Other times, it can be brought on by more serious conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes.

Chronic pain is constant, and waxes and wanes. It's most commonly caused by age, wear and tear on the body, chronic illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disorders such as osteo or rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.

These days we have an arsenal of different drugs to relieve our aches and pains, but we must take a conservative approach when doing so, as most have side-effects which can sometimes bring about conditions that are actually WORSE than the condition we are trying to treat!

Below is a list of the most common types of pain along with some suggestions as to how relieve them. If you are experiencing chest pains, difficulty breathing, blurry vision, high fever, confusion, vomiting, drowsiness, abnormal bleeding, stiff neck or a severe, unrelenting headache, do not attempt to treat yourself. Either call 911 or get yourself to your nearest emergency room as these symptoms are suggestive of much more serious and potentially life-threatening conditions.

HEADACHES are probably the most common kind of pain we experience, and there are just as many types as there are reasons we get them! If you are suffering from throbbing at your temples, or a feeling of a tightness around your head, you are probably experiencing a TENSION HEADACHE which can be relieved by very simple measures such as taking a couple of aspirin with a full glass of water, and relaxing in a quiet, dark room for a time. You should begin to feel better in about 30 minutes.

One of the most common, yet most overlooked causes of headaches is DEHYDRATION! Yes, many headaches can be cured with plain ol' H20. Try to get at least eight full glasses a day.

Another common, but often overlooked cause of headaches is tooth decay (cavities)
