To run a blog that people want to read and that will earn you money, you need to start with one thing, and that's passion.

The vast majority of blogs don't go anywhere because their owners read about how lots of people make lots of money with their blogs, start one up themselves without thinking about what it will take or the amount of effort they will have to put in to get any results, and then give up when they realise there is a learning curve to be tackled... not to mention some hard work and regular activity along the way.

That's why most successful blogs (if not all) are on subjects that their creators love. You need to love your blog if you want it to be a success and you are going to be able to write about it at least every other day.

This also links in to the fact that a successful blog is all about getting traffic. Making regular posts will attract the attention of the search engine spiders that crawl your site and index it in their search results. This will bring more visitors and hopefully over time repeat visitors as well.

Paying attention to your content is another area where you can make a big difference. Post longer entries as well as short ones, provide useful and worthwhile content, and make sure you have a fair sprinkling of keywords in your posts. This will help the search engines rank you more highly, and it will also help your blog show up more readily in search results.

Perhaps the most important aspect which goes into making a successful blog is TIME. You cannot create a large and complex blog overnight; similarly you cannot expect to get rated highly by the search engines overnight. You must give people time to find you, to become familiar with you, and to start thinking that it would be worthwhile to revisit you... and even link to your blog from their own.
