Have you ever been behind a person who is driving so slowly that they would qualify for the granny 500? Yeah, I know that guy, too.

This is a scenario in which we have all been in, which we all wish we would never have to get into and which we all laugh about later when we think about it because we have all sinned in the church of the cell phone. Gladly, you will never have to worry about being behind me talking on a cell phone and driving - I don't own one...a cell phone, that is.

Too many times during the drive time, we are behind people, in front of people, next to people, who are driving at a minimum of 50 miles per hour and they are driving while they are talking on the phone. This is very dangerous. People tend to get animated when they are talking to someone on the phone. You can see them holding the phone in one hand, the steering wheel in the other, and suddenly you see hands flailing. Flailing hands means that there are no steering hands. Even for a split second this is not very safe. Accidents happen in the smallest frames of time. We should all worry a little bit about the cellphone driver.

What is worse is the false sense of security we are all supposed to feel comfy and cozy with that is supposed to be given to us by hands-free devices. I am not sure what is worse - that I know someone is on the phone and I can see them with the phone in their hands and I can feel good about my calling them names and being boorish toward a perfect stranger. When I can see the phone in their hands, I know already that I need to be a little more careful around that driver because he or she is on the phone.

But with a hands free device, unless the quality is great, you are just as in peril as you are if you were driving next to a person on a hand held device. Hands-free devices are just as dangerous, because you have to KNOW how to use the stupid things BEFORE you can actually use them.

So, I believe that we should go back to the way we were before the invent of the cellphone.

Call them before you leave and get directions then.
If you forget to call them, pull over, off to the side of the road, to a safe place, and call. Please don't put me and my kids in danger so that you can talk about something that you forgot to say to the person who is probably at home asking you "didn't you just call me about that?"
