with the drama and terror of being the small thing in this story. They want the big Godzilla fight with the tiny New York skyline all around. It's just not that kind of movie.
But Abrams and the team aren't stupid. They know that they've made you sit through the drama and you want some pay off. I will only spoil this - you see the creature. You see it quite well - not wide screen, King Kong on the building - but you get the pay off. And when it comes it's natural and organic in the story. You are never told WHAT the creature is or why it's here. That was always the worst part of any Godzilla movie - the monster's motivation. Really, who cares? It's big and is eating everything - RUN! To me, Goddard, Abrams and everyone played this really smart.
I was quite satisfied with Cloverfield. It made good on two promises from a decade ago - the promise and long-dwindled potential of The Blair Witch Project AND the promise of GODZILLA with Matthew Broderick which could have been much, MUCH better than it was. It continues the great tradition of Orson Welles' fantastic War of the Worlds. What would it really be like? How would it look? What would you do? The terror of possibilities. The terror of being so small and lost in the middle of a battle so much bigger than you.
