Vacations

The best vacation ideas

Over-planning can be the ruin of a potentially enjoyable holiday. Some of the best vacations can behe result of placing just a little emphasis on the destination and a lot of emphasis on the activities. While consideration must be given to the type of holiday and the general area, freedom to pursue avenues of interest should be considered a priority. Even the weather and road conditions can cause havoc if the holiday is too structured.

Disappointment with the so called tourist driven, resort style destinations, is all too common. Brochures can be very misleading, when you arrive to find that the resort pool is, in fact, smaller than the sign, you know that you have been the victim of creative photography. Yes, all kids think that they want theme parks but the reality is that, during holiday season, these places are excessively busy and the queues are horrendous. Standing in line for an hour for a ten minute ride is a questionable use of precious, family, holiday time.

Many fun holidays can be had fishing, boating, bush walking and generally soaking up the ambience of smaller country centers. Some of the best meal experiences are to be found in small town hotels and restaurants. Good, honest, caring, local people who are happy to share their knowledge with you.

Sure, sometimes the accommodation can be a bit hit and miss but most times its only for a night or two and if its clean, then who cares that much? As long as everything works and the price is right, then it doesn't seem to interfere with the vacation.

Think of the things to do. Seek out the local fishing spots. What are the best sights? Is there something historically quirky? Have a meal at the local diner. Wander the main shopping precinct. Visit local markets. Take a barbecue lunch out to a local picnic spot, even if its just meat and bread and a little wine it'll be good, relaxing and refreshing because you're in a different location.

Buy the local newspaper and see what the locals are up to. Ask questions.
Visit a local Realtor and get the "vibe". Often this will have you driving off with a map and discovering even more points of interest. If local food has a special significance, seek out the best and have a gnaw on it, even if its not really your style, the experience is rewarding more often than not.

So what's the secret? Just book the first night or two. Don't get bound up with driving huge distances. 2-300 miles a day is enough. Allow a couple of lay days. Don't get too hooked on a set itinerary, be flexible. If you find a spot that you like, stay a little longer. Relax!

Often the test of a good holiday is how you feel when you arrive back home. Listen to your co-travelers. Get of the beaten track a bit FEEL the vibe of an area, UNWIND, your soul deserves the experience.
