Even if I wasn't a self confessed girly girl, I would never have been able to avoid
becoming an obsessive chick-flick fan. From a young age, my mother and auntie sat
me next to them as they swooned over the latest chick flick. Some of my earliest
memories are sick days from school, when my mum would cwtch me in a blanket on
the sofa, give me a glass of lemonade and sit on the chair next to me with her knitting
or magazine and we'd watch chick-flicks together- the advantages of having a stay at
home Mum! Cocktail, An Officer and A Gentleman, Pretty Woman, Dirty
Dancingthe scripts are instilled in my memory after years of watching, rewinding,
watching again and miming every single word as they came out of the mouths of my
on-screen heroes and heroines.
Now, instead of having to wait for a sick day to watch chick-flick after chick-flick, I
am old (and fanatical) enough to pop to my local Blockbuster store (or even my own
DVD rack), rent a movie or four, buy a huge bar of Galaxy, a pot of Ben and Jerry's,
rush home and put the kettle on and watch to my heart's content. There's a dress code
I abide by for a chick-flick day too. Clothes must be old and baggy, preferably in
colours or patterns that don't match. Ill-matched pyjamas work well. On top of said
mismatched clothes must be a hoodie or jumper belonging to my husband. Fluffy bed
socks are a pre-requisite, as is a blanket of a sort and two pillows from the bed.
Viewing of the chick-flicks always takes place on my living room sofa, partly because
the TV is bigger in this room, but also because it's closer to the kitchen for tea refills.
It needs to be said that marathon chick-flick viewing days usually take place on a
Saturday or Sunday, unless I have a day off mid-week. Mid-week marathons are even
better, however, because all titles are available in the video store and it's a little bit
naughty watching films all day when you should be in work. Oooh! I've just psycho-
analysed myself! Perhaps it's linked to childhood sick days where I'd watch the films
with my Mum, as mentioned above. Hmmmm! The advantage to having a film day on
the weekend though is that my husband gets a day's peace to watch footie or play his
Xbox and, a plus point for me is that, he's so glad to have online game time that he's
willing to make me cups of tea whenever I need one. No need to get off the sofa at all!
Perfect!
Now down to the nitty-gritty. What gives a film the honourable title of 'chick-flick'?
Well, a chick-flick must embrace the following factors:
