Poetry: Betrayal

Hidden

I listened to your footsteps echoing down the stairs,
To the front door slamming behind you,
Listened as your stilettos clicked on the concrete,
Fading until the car door closed and the engine revved.
You drove away.
Heart pounding, I opened your bedside drawer,
Fumbling, rummaging,
Hoping to find something, anything
That would tell me about you,
That would show me who you are
Behind the faade.
I pushed aside nail varnishes and hair grips,
The lotions and potions you cover yourself with every day,
The make-up that you hide behind.
Leaflets, till receipts, jewellery, hair brush.
Pens, chapstick, super glue, body lotion.
And, there it was, hidden in the back corner,
Tucked away, out of sight.
Cream paper and blue ink, a cursive hand.
He loves you.
He needs you.
He's there every day, behind the make-up, behind the lotions,
Behind your smile.

    I remember her best,
    In her white summer dress,
    Her blonde hair pulled
