Ice skating is a wonderful activity and competitive sport, that takes time and money to do. So if you're willing to put in a lot of your time and wealth into it, go for it, because in the end there is nothing better than knowing you accomplished something alot of people start doing but rarely finish. Figure skating is always in debate about whether it is a sport or just an activity. To me personally it is a sport jus the same as any because all the skaters work hard, maybe even harder then other athletes to become who they are.
I started ice skating lessons when I was about 12, yeah people told me that I was too old, but I would ignore it, see in my case it was different, I had already skated since I was 7 years old, but never really took lessons. It was quite a different experience that I was used to, because I had to start out from the very bottom. I knew how to do the spiral, the one foot spin; meanwhile I struggled with the snow-plow stop and backward wiggles. It would have been better if I had started off earlier with lessons, but maybe not. Looking at the other kids, I found out that they weren't really stable on their feet; they didn't seem comfortable in their skates. But I did, so that's why I was able to accomplish everything a bit faster than they could, not only that but I skipped a level, which gave me motivation and the support I needed to go on and try harder.
I think it's better for the person that wants to take lessons if they first get used to the ice, if they get used to the overall atmosphere before they get up and decide they want to take lessons. Figure skating lessons usually determine if the skater is serious about ice skating, or just wants to get some pointers. Personally for me figure skating lessons were what got me really hooked on figure skating, seeing all the cool things I could do, I wanted to try really hard to become on of those spinning, beautiful skaters.
