Ongoing career education and training: Tips and resources

Corporate jobs today demand employees to be flexible and adaptive to changes. An industry like Information Technology caters to different domains and thus expects proficiency in the domain. A product based company demands well trained and well informed employees in the domain that it is serving. Services based organization deals with a number of domains (Pharmacy, Media, Telecommunication, HR etc) and specialized people are harder to be available at a specific time in a particular domain.

Trainings thus become a part and parcel of the industry. Trainings could be class room based or on the internet. Trainers could be employees of the same organization or another organization. Companies sponsor employees to undergo trainings in specialized areas and get them certified in their specialization. The certification exam could be online (on the internet) or on paper. Examples of IT certifications include CSTE, MCSE, CCNA, CCNP and CCIE, Sun certification for Java etc.

CSTE: Certified Software Test Engineer
MCSE: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate
CCNP: Cisco Certified Network Professional
CCIE: Cisco Certified Internet Expert

Cisco has its publications for each of the certifications which you can get to master the subject. MCSE and Cisco certification are in the field of computer hardware and networking. There are a number of institutes like ISTQB and QAI conducting courses and certification in software testing. Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) would be required for pursuing MBA options. There is a number of books available including from Kaplan, Princeton etc. Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), SAP certification, Siebel certification are also quite popular among organizations.

There are instances where the background education of the employee would not meet the expectations of the company needs. Education on the required areas is provided by the organization for the employee to contribute effectively. Once the training is over and the employee is proved to be well versed in the imparted training, he/she is absorbed into the organization. Companies conduct behavioral, client interfacing, cross cultural and communication courses which aim to bridge any gaps between the expectations of the profession and the approach of the employee.

Organizations have a well equipped library which provides a wealth of knowledge thus aiding the employee to gather information and knowledge. Books are available which
