The main reason why some home businesses fail to make the grade is due to a lack of discipline.
Discipline is the one thing you have to have in bucket loads if you want to work from home. There are too many distractions to get by without it.
But discipline doesn't just apply to ignoring anything other than the job at hand. It also relates to working the required number of hours, doing what is necessary to complete an urgent task (even if it means working late - after all you have no one else to delegate to), and developing your business over time.
Of course the amount of discipline you have does depend to a certain extent on your workload. I am a full time freelance writer, and I don't need to worry too much about discipline when it comes to putting in the hours because I have so much work to do and so many urgent deadlines to meet, the fear of missing them kind of takes care of the discipline part!
Quite often, it's the quieter periods that determine how good you are at working from home. It's one thing to take a well earned extra afternoon off if you've been working hard on a project that is now completed, but if you are experiencing a lack of business then you need to be doing all you can to generate new business and new streams of income - not sitting back and watching television.
In this sense I think you need the right brain to be able to work successfully from home. It also helps to love your job; God knows I love mine but there are still some days when it's hard to get going.
Another main reason for the failure of some home businesses is the lack of knowledge people have about what it takes to run one successfully... before they take the plunge themselves. Real preparation and the determination and stubbornness to succeed go a long way towards creating a solid and successful home business you will be proud of - and that will last the test of time as well.
