"Patience is a virtue" Translation wait. Try telling this to a flighty Virgo who finds
herself constantly in a hurry. I will admit that I am impatient. I want what I want and I want
it now. I am learning however; to be ever mindful that life is a journey and not a race.
The world can be blamed for the constant rush of things though. Think of all the sale ads that
begin on Saturday and Sunday only where you can purchase for 75% off the ticketed price. Or
even at your favorite restaurant, when asked smoking or non do you find yourself thinking
of how long you are willing to wait even though you know you don't smoke? Your answer should
be "Non smoking please" but you know this buys you 20 minutes of waiting because non-smokers
still enjoy their food and can taste every bit of it. Smokers may only be fulfilling the need
to eat since smoking diminishes the olfactory senses. I wonder exactly how much time does the
average person wait in line, to get on line, to be seated at a restaurant or for a movie to
start. I think another reason that society can be blamed for this wretched hurry up and wait
phenomenon is because of all the improvements in technology. Cable was all dial-up at first
and it was great because you had several lines to try to connect with the web on but nobody
wanted to wait ten whole minutes to get on line so technology improved and we went to DSL.
This was still too slow so we upgraded to high speed. Now, for most people, there is virtually
no wait at all. I am so put off by waiting that I get irritated because I have to warm up
the car on a winter morning. My solution to that was not a good one but it took away the
wait. I started smoking. Whoa right? This was a bad choice I know so I quit and picked up a
book instead. Now it seems that I am a super nerd and every where I go I have to have a book
with me and if I am somewhat close to the end of the book I need to carry a back up book so I
don't have to wait to be occupied. "The art of waiting " what art? I can't see it as an art
I just look for ways to cope with the idea of having to wait and I haven't found one that is
totally foolproof yet. I do read but how into a book can you get when warming up the car?
You get engrossed in it and it's time to drive so you have to stop. What if in that three
pages you just read something great or terrible was about to happen? Something else to wait
for. Am I impatient or what?
