It should not be a question as to if they should regulate natural supplements and herbal remedies, but why are they not regulating them? A lot of people think because something is a natural supplement or an herbal remedy that it can not hurt them, but this is not the case with all herbal remedies or natural supplements. If the FDA doesn't monitor these products then how do you know you are getting what you pay for and want? What about the quality of these products and how do we know they are safe for us? Just because something says natural or herbal doesn't mean we are actually getting a good product. These are products that we ingest into our systems and because of this they should be monitored for safety, and to be sure we are getting the product we believe we are purchasing. Many people feel that the FDA goes overboard with the regulations and standards that they have set for the distribution of food and drugs. Would you feel this way if a herbal supplement you where giving your baby for colic caused him to have a severe reaction to the product? The reaction may not be from the herb that was used but the filler in the product. What if many people became sick from improper preparation and packaging of a product? At least with the FDA if something is wrong then there is some controls in place to slow or stop the medicine or supplement from going out further to the public.

Millions of dollars are spent on advertising these supplements to the public. The companies are making billions by using the terms natural and herbal because this is where our focus is today for a healthier me. There is no one to oversee and protect the public from problems that might arise from these products. With no safety in place there is no way that we can know or stop these companies if they are providing us with inferior products or products that are not safe for us. The FDA may not be perfect, but it is the safety net that we currently have in place and should be used for natural supplements and herbal remedies.
