Yearnings for the wonders of yesteryear fill my mind. How intoxicating it would be to have even ten treasures from days gone by make a comeback in 2008. Some of the comebacks I yearn for will I believe happen and some are only dreams.
1) Manners- Wouldn't it be lovely to walk out of a store without being shoved aside by people coming inside? Or to know that indeed someone will give up their seat on the bus for a pregnant woman? There was a time when people showed courtesy to each other without a second thought. It wasn't just that people tended to live in smaller communities where they knew each other but also because they were taught that manners made life more pleasant for everyone. We have tried the no manners route and have lived to tell the unpleasant tale of bruised feelings and bodies. More and more I see small courtesies reappearing as people embrace the philosophy of treating others as they would like to be treated.
2) Safety- There was a time when people left their front doors unlocked and walked home without fear at midnight. Now we not only lock our front doors but many have added burglar alarms to prevent home invasions. The idea of walking anywhere at midnight is now only a dream. I yearn for the carefree days when safety was taken for granted. I don't believe safety will improve as the increase in the general population has lead to an increase in the number of criminals. Our over-crowded jails have also meant early release programs for even repeat offenders.
3) Family television- The introduction of reality TV programs, raunchy talk shows, and back-stabbing contests have shown us a side of life that one usually finds under a rock. I've tried to explain to my children the joy of The Mary Tyler Moore, the Carol Burnett show, and oh so many wonderful family shows. I was afraid it was a joy they would never know. Yet, I see something wonderful happening with the growth of cable television. We now sit down as a family and watch the discovery channel, the history channel and yes, even reruns of my once beloved TV shows. Talking with friends has made me realize that people are thrilled to have found family television shows once again. I believe this trend will continue in the upcoming year.
4) Dressing up- There was a time when going downtown meant wearing your best clothes. Now we are lucky if our celebrities wear underpants when hitting the town. I miss dressing up and the sense of occasion it brought to any event.
