Important milestones in African-American education

If we are counting milestones we must start at the beginning. Many of the schools that African Americans attended were sub par to say the least. Until Brown vs.Board caused the United States to take a second look at separate but equal education. With that, desegregation followed ensuring that African Americans would be afforded the same resources and quality of education. One accomplishment of African American education was the start of the first HBCU. Without these universities to continue education, many African Americans would have not had the platform to establish themselves as contributing citizens of society. Even today after many of the evils of racism and discrimination have be thwarted, these colleges and universities still afford education for many. From this, many educational feats were accomplished. In 1930 Fisk became the first HBCU to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and schools. In 1984, UNICEF raises over 14 million dollars to support forty HBCU's. The following year, Morehouse becomes the first HBCU with an accredited Medical Program. There are many accomplishment that I am sure I have overlooked. This does not mean they are insignificant. It is clearly just an oversight one my part.

Over the years we have seen a rise and fall of the importance of education in the African American community.Though that is true, it is also true that those who still understand the importance of an education have many avenues in which to study and find acceptance. This can be attributed to all those before us who understood what education would mean to the African American culture and fought for the right to better themselves. Without that persistence of our forefathers the list of educational milestones would not be significant. I am almost sure had it not been for those few who refused to accept the inability of past educational systems to propel them into this new age of knowledge, the impact of education on the African American cultures would not be as great.
