Great houseplants that can't be killed

Through much trial and error and inadvertent neglect, the Spathiphyllum has proven itself to have a strong will to live and can tolerate even the most trying environments. Can't kill? Well, can't is a pretty strong word, but, I will say the Spathiphyllum is resilient and enduring. Short of a fake plastic plant that you can set out on the deck at twenty degrees below zero, my vote for endurance goes to the Spathiphyllum.

Some common names for the Spathiphyllum are white lily, sail plant and peace lily. Whatever name fancies you, this tropical plant is sure to please even the most negligent plant enthusiast. The sail plant is a tropical plant, but don't be fooled by this. The sail plant will fight and survive a wide range of abuses. Through drought, flood, arid atmosphere, the sail plant will readily spring back when given just a little attention. It will grace the home with a fresh, airy topical feel that is pest resistant as well as disease resistant.

There is no question when watering is required, although it is best to water before screaming commences and the plant wilts with sadness as its leaves slump toward the ground, choked dry, searching for water, screaming, "water me." Okay, yes, I have witnessed this desperate stage and near death experience in the sail plant's life, but the good news, just water well and the plant will soon rebound. Its leaves will perk up and reward you with a wonderful slightly fragrant white flower that resembles a sail, thus the nickname, sail plant.

The elegant deep lush green leaves are abundant. The sail plant will flower throughout the year. The flower has a slight scent, but nothing real significant. With little care this plant will survive; however, with special attention this plant will thrive and reproduce quite readily. You can propagate this plant rather easily by simply dividing the roots and replanting in a separate pot. The Spathiphyllum tops the list of plants with an unquestionable ability to withstand near death experiences and make even the most inexperienced plant enthusiast look like a pro. The instructions on the label should read, "No Green Thumb Required."
