Tips for men by men: How to really help your wife through pregnancy

Wow, what a topic, so many avenues come to mind that I am not sure which way to go. As the Dad of 7 wonderful children I feel like I can shed a little light on the subject. First of all let me say that I am NOT perfect, nor do I claim or pretend to be, my mistakes are innumerable. If you are a first time Dad then you have a long row to hoe. You are going to blow it, sometimes daily, but do not give up. Remember that your wife is going through some very new and sometimes scary changes, not only in her body but also in her heart and soul. The emotions that a newly pregnant woman experience can not fully be understood by men, it simply is something that we are unable to relate to. The best way for you to help your newly expectant wife is to be thoughtful, kind & loving. She is going to be a ball of raw & sometimes dangerous emotions that she will not really be able to control or explain. You need to think about what you can do to make this mysterious time more comfortable.

Once when my wife was expecting, she was feeling sick to her stomach, so I volunteered to make supper. Seems totally harmless, right? Well let me tell you that about half way through cooking supper, she staggered into the kitchen holding her mouth and in a gasping tone snarled "What are you trying to do? Kill me? " Surprised I answered, "No, whats wrong" "That stinks" she replied "I think I am going to puke, what is that crap you are cooking?" "I'm sorry, its sausage" was my reply. "Well it stinks! I don't know why you think that I can't cook, I'm pregnant - Not stupid!" she informed me. The situation spiraled downward from there....the more I tried to convince her that I had no ulterior motive, other than helping her, since she didn't feel well....the deeper I put my foot in my mouth. Could have I done something to prevent this situation? Probably not. Could I make it worse? Oh, yes! Gentlemen, when your wife seems like her personality has been taken over by ravenous pit bulls, you need to think about what is going on inside of her....Turn the other check, then turn it again, you only have 9 months to withstand, it will go fast.

Your wife has compromised her body for you & your baby, you need to be willing to compromise as well. Try to think of some of the things that you can do to help her, there will possibly be certain household tasks that have always been taken care of by your wife, but now that she is expecting may repulse her & send her to the bathroom like a drunken sailor.
