Some of us may be prone to headaches with unknown cause or reason. It is thus helpful to check out the possible causes and treatment options. When we have a headache, it disrupts our life and causes us pain and discomfort.
Headaches are disruptive to our daily activities and reduce our ability to perform at our peak. Having regular chronic headache without consulting a doctor is not advisable. If you are having severe headaches frequently, please see a doctor immediately, who may refer you to a neurologist, if required.
Doctors had recommended the use of a headache diary, to record the occurrences and possible causes of headaches.
This is very useful for the purpose of diagnosis, prevention and treatment. To find out the cause of your headaches, you can record your headaches on a calendar. Reflect and observe what you have been doing on the day and also for the past few days preceding your headache. After a period of time, the records will help in your tracking and discovery of the most likely cause(s) of your headaches.
Types of Headaches and Causes
1. Migraine headache
Pain at the temples, either one or two sides. The person may feel like vomiting. The person feels better by resting and keeping quiet.
Doctors believe that migraines may be due to the brain structure or genes. In the case on menstrual migraine, the cause may be due to hormone change. Migraine may be triggered by stress, weather change, loud noise or bright light.
2. Cluster headache
The pain usually occurs on one side of the head. The person feels better by moving around and being active. Cluster headaches could be due to genetic make-up of a person. The triggers of cluster headaches are alcohol and cigarette smoke. Cluster headache may develop when the person is asleep.
3. Sinus headache
Sinus headache is triggered by blocked nasal passage. This could be due to an infection which results in congestion. The patient may have ear pain and pressure, have a cough, running nose and may feel tired. The sinus can be treated by taking antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.
