Pronounced "SAY-rah". Sarah is the Arabic name for "the wife of Abraham". In Hebrew, it means "lady", "princess", or "princess of multitude".
ORIGIN & HISTORY:
In the Bible, she was originally called Sarai and later God declared that she would be called "Sarah". She shared a nomadic life with her husband Abraham and had her son Isaac when she was ninety years old. Sarah was described in the Bible as very beautiful, even in her older years.
POPULARITY:
Ever since the Social Security Administration started keeping records of popular names, back in 1880 until the present day, Sarah has been in the top 1,000 most popular names. As a matter of fact, it only dropped out of the top 100 names for eight years, between 1954 and 1961, reaching it's ultimate low of number 119 in 1959 and started to regain popularity after that. Sarah reached it's all time high in popular names at number 3 in 1993. Since then, it has slowly crept down the scale. It was number 15 in both 2005 and 2006.

In the seventeenth century, Sarah Jennings married John Churchill, who later became the Duke of Marlborough, thus becoming the Duchess of Marlborough. The duchess had a very close friendship with Anne Stewart, who became Queen Anne of Great Britain. Because of her close friendship with the queen, Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough became one of the most influential women in British history. Some of the members of the queen's court were jealous of her influence over the queen and sarcastically called her "Queen Sarah".
October 4th is designated as the official day for the name Sarah in France and July 19th is designated as the official day for the name Sara in Sweden. Also, every July 26th, the name Sarah is celebrated as a Feast Day in Ukrane.
In 1959, Super Typhoon Sarah peaked at 190 mph on September 15th. It decreased in intensity somewhat before hittin South Korea on the 17th and finally dissipated over Japan on the 19th.
In 1967, Hurricane/ Typhoon Sarah started out as a tropical storm on September 8th and became a hurricane on the 10th. The storm was reduced to a tropical storm on the 11th as it crossed the International Date Line, but started to increase in intensity. By the 15th, Sarah became a typhoon and on the 16th, Typhoon Sarah devastated Wake Island.
